    29.2. - 28.02.24

Echoes of antiquity meet modern crises in Pina Rücker's "Flugwesen". This mixed media marvel is not just sound to your ears; it's a historical dialogue, a whisper of species lost, and a quest for consciousness in our silicon age. A church hymn from the Thirty Years' War finds new life, reaching out to us across time, urging us to ponder our existence and the world we shape. From quartz bowls to semiconductor roots, this piece is a sonorous blend of the sacred and the scientific. Recommended: Engage with "Flugwesen" in solitude, let the intimate distress of history's prayers guide your contemplation at the Salon de Refusées.

  • 13.10.Ruprechtskirche

WARP builds an intricate setup for their music. They play with, and balance, waves and feedback phenomena that are produced and nourished with different sources. They work with vibrating glass and air, with airy columns inside the wooden tubes of a bass recorder, and inside the con- certina, with pulsing reeds made from steel, with analog and digital electronic sources, with microphones and speakers, while every sound is being reflected by the old stone walls and the wooden booths inside the church, by the bodies of the audience present. The reflections nourish and unbalance the music and vice versa. For the musicians including the sound designer, sonic fragility is not a quality or a fixed state of being, it is a process between materialities. It is about becoming active as a performer, it is about doing things. We recognize fragility as an activity and relationship: intra-acting, penetrating, interfering, blocking, directing, sharing. Is it false or is it true? A semi-stable, always-evolving material interaction which is audible. It is an ongoing victo- rious love affair of making, and listening to, waves and vibrations.

WARP envisions Ruprechtskirche as a crucial collaborator, activating and enlivening the sound in ways that are by turns predictable or spontaneous. As both the oldest church in Vienna and a unique acoustic atmosphere that is both reverberant and warm, this space is ideal for exploring the temporal and cumulative character of analog feedback. In collaboration with Ruprechtskirche as a spatiotemporal instrument, WARP aims to explore the unexpected sonic potentials of both stability and fragility, including the conflicting yet balanced tendencies for accumulation and ad- aptation, for continuity or abrupt change.

  • TORPOR by Laure Boer.

    2021 vierte welt berlin W L.Boer electr./Evelyn Saylor von./electr.

2022 morphine records berlin w Tintin Patrone tromb / Cedrik Syrphe electr. / Dayang Aiola / Evelyn Sailor voc.+electr. and Tuusa Agostino

The score addresses the difficulty to relate to the abstraction of the covid-19 pandemic on a global scale on one side, and the falling in a period of torpor on a personal scale on the other side. The composition is built both, on the Robert Koch Institute’s statistical data of the number of deaths due to the pandemic in Germany as well as on photographs of everyday life during this period.

The first part of the score was based on the four seasons of the year 2020 and was presented as part of “Composite by the Numbers” (curated by Dayang Yraola). For CLOUDS ON CLEAR SKY, the score will be extended by 3 additional seasons corresponding to the duration until the launch of the project in September. For this edition, the piece - which can be performed by 3 to 13 musicians - will be interpreted by Laure Boer (dan bau), Pina Bettina Rücker (quartz sound bowls made of silicon) and Evelyn Saylor (vocals), all three bringing their own interpretation and musical particularities to the project. Each musician chooses a line. Where there is a light, there is a sound. This can mean volume or intensity, depending on the instrument. The ellipses are total silences referring to the amount of deaths in Germany. The photos and the seasons act as a narrative frame for the compositions. In this frame one comes back to very basic transcriptions of sensations: where you have light, you have sound. A way to transcribe the feeling of torpor, uncertainty and the necessity to move forward each day, step by step.

TORPOR is part of the project CLOUDS ON CLEAR SKY, a series of events and performances on finitude, death and grief.

    Laure Boer: »TORPOR« (2021)

Based on statistical data on the number of deaths due to the Covid-19 pandemic, TORPOR addresses the discrepancy between the abstraction of numbers and the personal experience. Light and darkness in the graphic score translate to sound and silence.on
